Market Access Africa Joins Global Effort to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance Through UTI-Diag Project

May 20, 2025

The launching of the UTI-Diag project to help drive equitable access to innovative UTI diagnostics and combat antimicrobial resistance in low-resource settings across sub-Saharan Africa.

Market Access Africa is proud to announce its participation as a key partner in UTI-Diag, a newly launched international initiative aimed at improving the detection and management of urinary tract infections (UTIs), reducing inappropriate antibiotic use, and tackling the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in low-resource settings.

UTIs affect millions worldwide, and antibiotic resistance is making them increasingly difficult to treat, particularly in low-resource settings. New diagnostic tools reach the communities that need them most—particularly those disproportionately affected by AMR and health system inequities.

Through funding by the European Union’s EDCTP3 programme and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the UTI-Diag project brings together 11 leading organizations across Europe and Africa to develop and scale rapid, affordable, and accurate diagnostic solutions for UTIs. The project will have a strong focus on vulnerable populations—including pregnant women and children across sub-Saharan Africa.

As part of this consortium, Market Access Africa brings its expertise in health systems, regulatory pathways, product introduction, and market access strategies to support the adoption and scale-up of innovative diagnostic tools across sub-Saharan Africa.

Our involvement in the UTI-Diag project is driven by our commitment to accelerating equitable access to life-saving health technologies across the continent. Thus, we aim to ensure that quality UTI diagnostics are accessible, affordable, and aligned with local health priorities particularly for the targeted vulnerable populations.
